It seems every client struggles with how to point stories.  There are many reasons why this is more difficult than it appears in the training exercises or when a consultant states the ideal state of relative to smallest story pointing method.  Most companies end up with explicit durations per point, these vary from client to client, but in the end a point represents some amount of effort expressed in duration of time (e.g., 1 point equals 4 hours).  This article explores the causes of why this is so difficult, the arguments for each (and challenges) and finally an opinion and recommendations.
